He was called the ," SANGEETHA PITHA MAHAR," that is father of karnatic music. He has composed more than any other composer could compose .All his songs are BHAKTH BHAVA and are in simple sanskrit and kannada language.Some of his songs are very high in philosophy.His songs are popularly known as DEVARA NAMAS.His contribution to music is very vast.He only introduced the SERALI VARISAI, JANDA VARISAI, THE SAPTHA THALA ALANKARAS, AND ALSO THE GEETHAM.The GEETHAMS are also called THE SHULADHI GEETHANGAL.It was only he who introduced the 7 thalas and after whom the 7 thalas came into use.The saptha thalas have 3 angas the LAGU, DHRUTHAM AND ANUDRUTHAM.Apart from this it was he who established that MAYAMALAVA GOWLA ragam , must be the raga for the ABYASAGANAM, that is the sarali varisai janta varisai and alankaram. He found a scientific reason to follow this.Before his period shankara bharanam was the raga for abyasa ganam. Now all the musicians and students followed the path of Sri Purandara Dasar to sing and practise the sarali, janta and alnkaras in the raga MAYAMALAVA GOWLA.
